I published a post on types of instructors that I’d worked with, but I realized something… I forgot a few! The truth is there are so many different types of instructors; it’s hard to recount them all. Of course, as any of my more consistent readers have discovered, just because something is hard doesn’t mean a black belt isn’t willing to do it. So, here are 5 more amazing instructors!
The Comedian
This instructor is incredibly funny. They excel with younger kids, even if the kids don’t always get the jokes. Their sense of humor captures the students’ attention and earns their respect. The Comedian may struggle with a difficult class, but most of the time, their classes are very effective! Kids find them hilarious, and parents love them too. Sure, they might goof off occasionally, but the best ones strike a balance between humor and professionalism.
The Game Designer
For these instructors, learning is all about play! They know how to turn everything into a game. Literally everything! Even stretching at the beginning of class becomes an interactive game. Kids naturally love this approach. The Game Designer is particularly effective with white belts. Even some older adults appreciate their ability to make even the most mundane exercises enjoyable!
The Examiner
This instructor is quite judgmental. They have no qualms about sharing their opinions. They set high standards and expect you to meet them. In a typical class, they might not be the best instructor, but on testing day? That’s when they shine. Their judgment might stress you out during regular classes, but their harsh yet fair examination can feel oddly reassuring during a test. They may be sharp with their criticism, but you know they will accurately assess your technique.
The Author
This individual writes extensively about taekwondo. They might even run a blog where they post articles on a wide range of topics. Skilled with both the pen and the sword, the Author can be hard to find at the dojang. When not in the classroom, they often seem to be tucked away, reading or writing. However, the few conversations you have with them are always enlightening.
Find your best instructors and learn what you can from them!
The Lifer
This person lives, breathes, and dreams of taekwondo. Every time you walk into the dojang, they are there—teaching, training, or just hanging out. They are incredibly cool, helpful, and passionate. When they talk about taekwondo or their life in it, they make it sound like it is everything to them. Most likely, it is. Lifers can often be found in the park, training.
Whether doing pull-ups on tree branches, meditating under a tree, or practicing poomse, they are out there training. What if it’s winter? That hardly stops them. Lifers enjoy sharing their love of taekwondo with everyone around them!
The Importance of Different Instructors
Instructors come in a wide variety of forms, each with distinct characteristics. This uniqueness is what makes them exceptional. The most effective instructors know how to teach while making learning enjoyable. Moreover, excellent instructors serve as outstanding role models.
Learning from Different Teaching Styles
Each type of instructor offers something unique. The Comedian brings laughter, while the Game Designer introduces fun through play. The Examiner provides valuable feedback, and the Author shares knowledge through writing. Finally, the Lifer embodies passion and dedication.
So, seek out the best instructors and absorb as much as you can from them! Have you met any of these types of instructors? Drop us a message and let us know!
